SLL 120: The Image Of Women In Spanish Literature (SPAN 427)
Course Description
Study of Spanish Literature from its "radical historicity", through images of the women who produce the texts, as much men as women writers. Differentiation of the different configurations of femininity in virtue of the
consolidation of the patriarchal bourgeois society in Spain, and of the possible influence of gender of the male or female author in the construction of the imaginary feminine. (18th Century- 21st Century)
Course Reflective Narrative
During the Spring Semester 2013, I completed SLL 120: The Image of Women In Spanish Literature (18Th Century), this class is the equivalent to SPAN 427. This course was about trying to see the perspective of women through the years and to try and think about how women were treated when those books were written.
The class helped me develop my MLO 3 skills because of the material that was presented in this course. We studied the image of women in Spanish literature, and how women were seen through the years in literary texts. To study the image of women in texts we had to figure out if the women were a subject or object, most of the time women were objects. Through the literature we also studied the history of women and their struggle to be independent.
Before this class I had no idea of what women went through in Spain, how being under Franco’s regime slowed their progress. According to Franco’s regime women were supposed to be at home taking care of their husband and children. Women were always to be accompanied by a man, their husband, father, uncle or brother. This class showed me that as a female I should value the freedom that I have and to not take it for granted. At the beginning of class the teacher gave us a list of books, we went over some novels but there are a few that I want to read. I want to read those books and learn more about the image of women in Spanish literature. After reviewing many pieces of literature, in most cases women were seen as objects because they did not have a say in what their future would be. As a woman it is sad that most female characters were objects, and that the ones that did whatever they wanted to were seen as a bad example. I hope to see more female characters in novels as subjects because our literature and world needs it. There are still some books that were recommended by the professor that I would like to read to further my knowledge in this subject.
