The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech.
● The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.

The Courses
The fulfillment of the requirements of MLO 2: Language and linguistic Knowledge was completed through SPAN 301: Composition/Oral Practice, SPAN 313 Intro to Spanish Linguistics.
MLO Narrative
I have completed four courses that belong under the Language and Linguistic Knowledge MLO 2, two that are required and two that I chose to take. To fulfill the core requirements I had to take SPAN 301: Composition/Oral Practice, and then I had to take a Language and Linguistics course, so I chose SPAN 313: Introduction to Spanish Linguistics. I also took SPAN 305: Spanish for The Professions, and SLL 108: Spanish-Advance Grammar (SPAN 303).
I did not want to take linguistics, because I felt that it was going to be super hard for me, and it was. But Professor Brown was always answering our questions, and explaining everything with a lot of details and passion, he really made the class easy to understand. We learned the sound of each letter, and how you write them. I was aware of different accents, but I did not know the history behind it. When I took Introduction to Spanish Linguistics I learned the reason behind the accents, I am also now aware of how when we talk to different people we use a different level of Spanish. For example when I am talking to my friends I may use more slang, than when I am talking to my parents or professors.
The courses that I completed, met the MLO 2 outcomes. The outcomes of MLO 2 are for the student to develop an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and be able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether writing or in speech. By taking all of the MLO 2 classes, I learned that depending on whom you are talking to the formality of the language varies. An example given in a class made it very simple to understand, that while the lawyers in different countries of Latin America will be able to have a conversation and know exactly what each other is talking about, the farmers of different countries of Latin America would have a hard time to understand each other and know what they are talking about. It is so interesting how the Spanish speakers from different places speak different depending on their region. That there are many variables, where we are from and grew up plays a big role on how we speak. Another thing that is so amazing is how people who speak Spanish, may not be able to understand each other. It happen to me in Granada, Spain, I could not understand them, and they could not understand me. One person from the program told me that it was hard to understand me and two others from the program, and the funny part is that the three of us are from Jalisco, Mexico.
Also when writing a letter, it depends who the recipient is, there is a formality that you have to follow depending on who you are writing the letter to. I also learned the sound system of Spanish and history of Spanish language. The four courses that I took for MLO2, have help me to know more about the history of Spanish, and also helped me understand why we do certain things. Because Spanish is my first language, I know how to do things, but did not know why? Now I am more knowledgeable, and know the rules and reason behind it. I would like to take more linguistics courses and keep up with the Spanish language changes.
