104B: Contemporary History Of America (SPAN 309)
Course Description
This course covers the historical development of the Latin-American countries from their independence up until the present-day. Through well-characterised periods the most relevant aspects of their nationality are studied: the formation of the state, the political evolution, social classes, economic areas, without forgetting questions such as the demographic boom, the foreign debt, or the indigenous problem. The objective is a better understanding of the causes and determining factors of contemporary Latin-America.
Course Reflective Narrative
The class HIST 104B: Contemporary History of America, which is the equivalent to SPAN 309, helped me understand in more detail what I had learned in my SPAN 306 class. During class we went over the independence of Latin-American countries until present-day. I completed this course in the Spring Semester of 2013, and this class meets the MLO 3. This course contributes to my fulfillments of MLO 3 because the class is a history class. During class we learned the structure of contemporary society, the contemporary economic structures, Latin America from 1945 onwards, the crisis of 1929 in Latin America, The Mexican Revolution, Imperialism and Interventionism of the USA, liberalism, economic expansion and the independence of the Hispanic countries.
During class we had a midterm and a final exam as well as a presentation. Like every class there is always something new, this class was not the exception. Something that captivated my attention was Cuba’s revolution and Fidel Castro. I think it was something that I always wanted to know about, how Fidel Castro took control over Cuba. This class was a class that I really enjoyed because it had to do with me. My goal and next step is to keep learning about the different countries, and keep reading about their history. I was able to learn more about Mexico’s history which is where I was born. My goal is to keep learning because my plan is to be a teacher and want to be able to share everything that I know with my future students.
