Course Reflective Narrative
SPAN 301S: Service Learning, is a class that is required, and teaches students about helping out. I really enjoy doing the community service with The Central Coast Citizenship Project, which is located in 931 East Market St. Salinas, CA. At the beginning of the course, various nonprofit organizations did a presentation to show what their goals are, and how they help the community. It was very interesting to get to know all of this organizations, and it was hard to chose one. I end up working with the Citizenship Project, and we could either work answering the phones at the office or tutoring. I chose to help out tutoring, and most of the people there were at least 50 years old or older. They were allow to take the civics test in Spanish, but had to learn some history and civics of the USA.
The time went by really fast, even though the tutoring was to go over the same information over and over, I really enjoy it. Because I got to see people getting their citizenship and that was very rewarding. To actually see that the time you put in, does makes a difference and it helps them out. There were some people that did not know how to read or write, I taught them how to read. I also taught them how to write their name, seeing how grateful they were was a really good feeling. I really like how when they passed their citizenship test, they came back to give us the good news, and brought food for everyone to celebrate together. I think the Citizenship Project is a really awesome place to volunteer, because of the great people you get to work with. I learn so much from all of them, and It was a pleasure to work with extraordinary people.
