Overall Integrated Narrative
I chose Spanish as my major because Spanish is my first language. Although Spanish is my first language, I didn't know much about the language itself, its history, structure, etc. I know how to speak it and other brief stuff but in this major I knew I would learn the history of various Hispanic countries in Latin America including Mexico. I was born in Mexico, so I wanted to learn more about my birth home. I chose Literacy and Cultural Knowledge as my emphasis because I wanted to learn about the different cultures and civilizations in Latin America as well as read and learn more about Hispanic literature.
My initial goal was to get a BA in Spanish and either teach at the high school or college level. But, I also wanted to be done in two years and start teaching after I was done with the teaching credential program. I already had a plan and it was going to take me about 3 years to make it happen. But things change and after I attended one of the study abroad workshops, I knew I had to take the opportunity. So I went to study abroad in Granada, Spain and I still want to get my teaching credential and after I am done with that maybe go to Grad school for my Masters in Spanish. At first I was in a rush to finish school, but now I am more calm about it. I am enjoying every step of the way.
I have learned so much in this major. From little details in the difference in punctuation between English and Spanish, to writing a constructive essay and writing formal letters depending on who the specific recipient is. There has been so much Invaluable knowledge from different Latin American countries and from Spain in literature, history, civilization and culture. It is really easy to say this is what I have learn, but to actually name every single thing that I have learned in three years it would take me a long time. When writing the course narratives and MLO narratives, I have been looking at the notes that I have been taking and looking at the books for those classes brings up a lot of memories from class and classmates. It has been three years and I have accomplished so much. Today, I am seeing how all of my classes have helped me be able to help friends with their projects and some of the knowledge that I have in certain areas is indescribable. I can’t wait to be able to share everything that I have learned with other people and future students. During these three years I have met many professors that inspire me to be like them. I want to be like those professors that do not get tired of the same questions and that are always energetic about the materials they teach. Those professors that show their passion in what we are learning and despite them teaching the same class over and over, they still show us the passion that they have for what they are teaching. My experience at California State University Monterey Bay with the small class sizes that allow for personal relationships with the professors and the ability for everyone to be engage in class has been a rewarding experience.
I would say I am proud about everything I've learned at California State University Monterey Bay, every single detail. I have learned so much in the different culture and linguistic classes. The linguistic classes were very challenging, but at the end of the class it was so rewarding to know so much about the Spanish language. All the culture and literacy courses were very interesting and at the end of the semester my peers and I wanted to learn more about the authors, cultures, poems, history, etc. My three years at CSUMB has just been precious with everything that I have learned. I believe there is always space for growth and studying at CSUMB has showed me that there is always something new to learn.
